HAPPY SUNDAY!
Thank you for joining us – grab a cuppa and let’s chill together!
RELAX, Take it easy - and yes I am referencing this golden oldie by Mika - if you have not heard this song before, where have you been? Check it out HERE!
Sunday is known for being a day of worship and rest. It is Sunday today and instead of being on my bed, Netflixing and eating all the junk in the world - I am stuck behind my desk, forgetting to eat, getting this accounting done while feeling like the whole world is about to come to an end - where is the rest?
If this is you RELAX, Take it easy - this song was created for a reason and Mika meant it! If you are unaware, there is a concept known as “working too hard” - where our song RELAX, Take it easy is forgotten about completely. Our lecturers and parents are forever telling us to “work hard” - it is thrown at our faces regularly but have we ever thought what does it mean to “work hard”?
The “work hard” definition I hope you are hearing is one where you commit to achieving your goals by putting the hours and work in, however it is done in a pace that works for you without compromising on the essentials such as getting sufficient sleep, rewarding yourself with lunch dates with mates and eating well. You know what you are capable of, you know your limits and you will not step foot out of those limits. If you can only concentrate for 30 minutes, you will give it your all in that 30 minutes, take a break and resume another 30 minute session. This is the healthy definition of “work hard”.
The unhealthy “work hard”, which I hope you are not hearing and I pray you will never find yourself in this mode is when you exceed your limits. This is known as overworking yourself, moreover a “burnout”. It is common among many students as well as professionals. We want the money. We want the grades. But what is the point of enjoying the money and the grades if you are all weary and tired out? We have those occasional moments where we need to overwork because maybe we missed out on a whole week of lectures because we were sick - that is okay but what is not okay is when we make it a habit, when it becomes regular. You are overworking when you find it difficult to relax, your schedule from Monday to Sunday is always filled with study sessions from morning to night that there are no breathers in between, and your health starts to deteriorate due to regular lack of sleep and not eating well. If you find your list of things-to-do growing you need to plan your weeks ahead and ensure you put your health first rather than some bullet point on a list-of-things to be done first.
If you fall into this habit of “overworking” - beware of the negative side effects regarding your health like potential insomnia, depression and remember these side effects can also hamper your studies - for example if you have a lack of energy how will you keep yourself awake and alert when writing your exam?
Some things you can do to fall out of this habit is to create a schedule for the week, giving yourself a certain number of tasks you know you are capable of doing for the day. Make sure that number is done and do not give yourself extra tasks - say no. Set a time to do those tasks, prioritizing breaks and bedtime as well as the time you have the mental capacity to focus in. If you can only concentrate for 30 minutes that is how long your sessions should be. Planning yourself well is the medication to prevent and/or heal from overworking. If you feel this is all a bit too much for you to do on your own, then feel free to reach out for help to a parent, guidance counsellor, lecturer, friend as well as online - there is some great material to help you navigate your life and you will be able to RELAX, Take it easy! What? It is a cool song to jam to!

Quote of the week
“Understand what the scholarship you’re applying to is looking for in its applicants and answer the application questions accordingly. If you feel that you do not have the desired background or qualifications, work on obtaining them and apply later. It is also my advice to learn about various scholarships early on as a student so that you can utilize opportunities at the right time. And lastly, all the best!”
